Golf has a rich and storied history in California, evolving from exclusive clubs to a sport enjoyed by many across the state. The journey of golf in California is filled with notable milestones and entertaining anecdotes that highlight its unique place in the state’s culture.

Early Beginnings

The roots of golf in California can be traced back to the late 19th century. In 1897, a nine-hole course was established in Balboa Park, San Diego, marking one of the state’s earliest forays into the sport. Around the same time, the Presidio Golf Course in San Francisco was built in 1896, and Del Monte Golf Course opened in 1897, both of which remain operational today.

The Roaring Twenties Boom

The 1920s witnessed a significant surge in golf’s popularity in Southern California. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) expanded from 18 clubs with 1,371 members in 1919 to 45 clubs with approximately 20,000 members by 1925. This period also saw the establishment of many courses that are now considered landmarks in golf course design.

Pebble Beach: A Jewel of the Coast

Pebble Beach Golf Links, designed by Jack Neville and Douglas Grant, opened on February 22, 1919. Neville aimed to position as many holes as possible along the picturesque Monterey coastline, resulting in the course’s iconic “figure 8” layout. Over the years, it has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments and remains a bucket-list destination for golfers worldwide.
