Lake Merced has been revitalized thanks to Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner, and their team. Originally redesigned in 1962 due to freeway construction, which altered Alister MacKenzie’s 1929 work, the course had lost its signature barrancas, sandy waste areas, and bold bunkering. Hanse’s restoration recaptured these elements using historical research, rebuilding all green and tee complexes and refurbishing 150,000 square feet of bunkers in MacKenzie’s style.
The result is a masterpiece that marries MacKenzie’s architectural legacy with Hanse’s skill, solidifying Lake Merced as one of California’s great golf courses and a must-visit for enthusiasts.
