Nestled on the edge of Los Angeles, the North Course at Los Angeles Country Club is a true architectural gem, brought back to life by the 2010 restoration led by architect Gil Hanse, alongside Jim Wagner and Geoff Shackelford. While their work didn’t replicate the original bunkering style of George C. Thomas, it embraced the dynamic and visually striking style of Thomas’ collaborator, William P. Bell.
The front nine weaves rustically through a shallow canyon, with holes crisscrossing a dry barranca, creating a unique and engaging layout. The back nine shifts to a more expansive upland terrain, featuring standout par 3s: the formidable 11th, stretching to nearly 300 yards, and the charmingly short 15th, often played at just 90 yards.
Hanse’s restoration not only revived the course’s strategic brilliance but also set the stage for an unforgettable test of skill when LACC’s North Course hosted the 2023 U.S. Open.
