Originally a private course, the Stadium Course at PGA West gained notoriety as part of the Bob Hope Desert Classic until its punishing difficulty led pros to petition for its removal from the rotation. Thankfully, it’s now back, offering a Pete Dye masterpiece at his most audacious. The finishing stretch mirrors Dye’s famous TPC Sawgrass, with the par-5 16th (“San Andreas Fault”) challenging players to take risks, the par-3 17th featuring an island green, and the par-4 18th guarded by water all the way to the green. Though once divisive for its extreme difficulty, the Stadium Course has matured into an architectural marvel that encapsulates Dye’s bold mid-career style.
